India Visa & Entry Requirements

Before travelling to India, it is essential to understand the visa and entry requirements applicable to your nationality. India has introduced a convenient electronic visa (e-Visa) system that allows citizens of most countries to apply online before arrival. Below is a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for your journey.

Types of Indian Visa

e-Tourist Visa

Available for tourism purposes. Valid for 30, 90 or 365 days with single, double or multiple entries. Most popular choice for leisure travellers.

e-Business Visa

For business meetings, trade fairs and conferences. Valid for 365 days with multiple entries. Cannot be used for paid work.

e-Medical Visa

For medical treatment in India. Valid for 60 days with triple entry. Requires letter from Indian hospital.

Regular Visa (Embassy)

For stays exceeding e-Visa validity or specific purposes. Apply at the Indian Embassy or Consulate in your country.

How to Apply for an Indian e-Visa

The Indian e-Visa system is simple and fully online. Follow these steps:

1

Check Eligibility

Verify that your country is eligible for the Indian e-Visa. Citizens of most countries in Europe, the Americas, Australia and many Asian nations qualify.

2

Apply Online

Visit the official Indian e-Visa portal and complete the application form with personal details, travel information and upload required documents.

3

Pay the Fee

Pay the e-Visa fee online using a credit/debit card. Fees vary by nationality and visa type — tourist visas typically cost between $10–$80.

4

Receive ETA

Receive your Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) via email — usually within 72 hours. Apply at least 4 days before travel.

5

Travel to India

Print your ETA or save it on your phone. Present it at the Indian port of entry along with your valid passport.

Passport Requirements

  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
  • Passport must have at least 2 blank pages for stamps
  • Passport must not be a temporary or emergency passport (for e-Visa)
  • Holders of diplomatic passports should contact their Indian Embassy
