India train railway station public transport travel

India has one of the world's largest and most complex transport networks — and navigating it is part of the adventure. From the largest railway network on the planet to the humble auto-rickshaw weaving through city traffic, getting around India is an experience in itself. This guide will help you travel safely, efficiently and affordably.

1. Indian Railways — The Backbone of Indian Travel

India's railway network is one of the world's largest, with over 13,000 trains connecting virtually every corner of the country. For long-distance travel, trains are comfortable, affordable and an authentic India experience.

Train Classes

  • 1A – First Class AC (most expensive, very comfortable)
  • 2A – 2-Tier AC Sleeper (recommended for overnight)
  • 3A – 3-Tier AC Sleeper (good value)
  • SL – Sleeper (no AC, budget option)

Booking Tickets

  • Book on IRCTC website (irctc.co.in)
  • Foreign visitors quota: Tatkal and Tourist Quota
  • Book 60 days in advance for popular routes
  • Apps: IRCTC Rail Connect, MakeMyTrip, Ixigo

Best Trains for Tourists

  • Rajdhani Express — fastest trains between Delhi and major cities
  • Shatabdi Express — fast day trains for shorter intercity routes
  • Vande Bharat Express — India's newest, fastest modern trains
  • Palace on Wheels — luxury heritage train through Rajasthan (premium)

2. Buses — Budget-Friendly Long-Distance Travel

For destinations not served by trains, or for more flexibility, buses are a practical option. Quality ranges enormously:

  • Volvo AC Sleeper Buses — comfortable overnight buses on key routes, highly recommended
  • State Government Buses — economical but basic, often crowded
  • Book via redBus.in, Abhibus or MakeMyTrip
  • Expect buses to run 30–60 minutes late on average

3. Auto-Rickshaws & Tuk-Tuks

The auto-rickshaw (three-wheeled motorised vehicle) is the quintessential short-distance urban transport in India. It's convenient, cheap and fun — but requires some street savvy:

Always agree on a price BEFORE getting in if the driver won't use the meter. Research typical fares for common routes. For metered rickshaws, ensure the meter is visible and running. Don't be afraid to walk away and try another driver if the price is too high. A polite but firm "no thank you" and walking away often results in the driver immediately offering a better price.

Ola (India's equivalent of Uber) and Uber itself both operate auto-rickshaw services in most Indian cities. These are highly recommended — prices are fixed, transparent and paid through the app. No bargaining required, and safety features include driver tracking and trip sharing. Download both apps before you arrive.

4. Taxis & Ride-Hailing Apps

  • Ola and Uber — available in over 100 cities, safest and most transparent option
  • Meru Cabs and InDriver — alternatives in some cities
  • Hotel taxis — more expensive but vetted by your hotel
  • Always ensure driver knows destination before accepting trip

5. Domestic Flights

India's domestic aviation market is extensive and affordable. For distances over 700km, flying is often faster and comparable in price to premium train tickets.

  • Major Airlines: IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara, Akasa Air
  • Book 4–8 weeks in advance for best prices
  • Compare on MakeMyTrip, Skyscanner, Cleartrip or Google Flights
  • Baggage allowance varies — check before booking
  • ID required: passport always accepted; Indian nationals use Aadhar/PAN

Safety While Using Public Transport

  • Keep your bag on your lap or between your feet on buses and trains
  • Do not share your accommodation details with strangers during the journey
  • Use official pre-paid taxi stands at airports and train stations where available
  • Women travelling alone should use women-only train carriages (marked pink/ladies) where available
  • Save the local emergency number (100 for police) in your phone

  • Ola – Taxis & auto-rickshaws
  • Uber – Ride-hailing
  • redBus – Long-distance buses
  • MakeMyTrip – Flights & trains
